Saarinen believed that no person had experienced a comfort so great as when they were in their mother's womb. With this belief in mind he aimed to create a chair that would be extremely comfortable no matter that position one sat in. The use of foam, polyester fabric and the "bowl like" form of the design heightens this comfort.
To re-interpret "Womb Chair" i focused on the stongest concepts behind the chair ( those being comfort, the encapsulating form and the colour red with its obvious connotations) and kept them as constants whilst leaving materiality and construction methods to be completely redesigned. This meant the chair's physical form could be very recognisable. Timber limbs give the chair a warmer feel and allow for simple construction through notched "ribs" that slot into each other to create a strong frame. These rib structures allow for a curved form that follow the countours of the original design. Four timber legs "grow" out from underneath the center of the chair and seem to be extensions of the "rib" structures.
