Carter Boehm's profile

Montana Studio Offers Adaptable Filming Location

A graduate of Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, Carter Boehm studied film before going on to become the founder and president of Ponderosa Films based in Vienna, Virginia. Carter Boehm also partnered with Colin Davis and Richard Gray to develop the Yellowstone Film Ranch, a filming location based in Montana.

Located just outside of Chico Hot Springs, Montana, the Yellowstone Film Ranch features a permanent movie set fashioned after an 1800s gold rush-era town. The design of the full-service studio, framed in a “Y” shape, allows filmmakers to shoot the set from different perspectives, making the same buildings look new in each shot. The location hosts a variety of movie productions, including the most recent project, Robert the Bruce.

In the case of Robert the Bruce, the Yellowstone Film Ranch stands in for locations in 14th century Scotland. The ranch’s 26 structures are constructed in a way that film crews had the ability to model them after period-appropriate buildings. Additionally, filmmakers earn tax credits when they choose to film a project in Montana.
