EESTEC Spring Congress 2021 logo

Goal
Creating a logo and event identity that represents the event well but stands out against previous EESTEC Congress logos. At the same time it should provide an easy way of replicating elements of visual identity by different Design Team members that will create other design projects for the Congress and allow to make a complementary logo for the wrap up party after the event.

About EESTEC Spring Congress
EESTEC (Electrical Engineering StudenTs' European assoCiation) is a nonproft student organization which connects Electrical Engineering and Computer Science students across Europe (48 branches strong as of 2021). Local committee in Cracow resides in AGH UST since 1998.

Spring Congress is the most important annual gathering in the Association. Every year representatives of all local committees travel across Europe to sum up past year’s projects and decide on the future of EESTEC. A Congress celebrates multiculturalism and cooperation. Congresses have been driving the development of EESTEC for over 30 years. It is customary that after the event an International Motivtional Weekend is organized where participants share their countries' iconic foods and drinks and party.

The idea
To distinguish this design from all other Congress logos we decided to play around with the concept of abstraction. The most prominent inspiration came from Baku Design City logo by Mehman Mammedov.

The base idea was to use vibrant colors (somewhat based on a peacock feather) to represent the vitality and dynamicity of a Congress and abstract symbols resembling Cracow to connect the event to where it will be taking place.

While working on the symbols I discovered the unusual shape of Cracow’s Main Square which resembles a speech bubble in a comic book or a message in an app. I decided to use it as the focal point of the logo.

The logo as it is represents the conversation, communication and cooperation that are the lifeblood of the Congress.

Multiculturalism shows itself within the logo as different symbols in the speech bubble – we all speak in different languages, about different things in various ways. But what matters is that we are talking with one another, exchanging ideas – that’s what EESTEC is all about.

Online communication is the base of international cooperation (or local too – in COVID times). Because of the similarity of the main shape to a messaging app, this logo may be even more impactful in the case of the event happening online.

Lastly, thanks again to the resemblance to messaging apps and the symbols within, this logo can be interpreted as a message that invites you to Cracow, invites you to join the conversation. It is a call to action in itself.
