EROSION CHAIR
A STERIOTOMIC EXPLORATION IN LINEAR MATERIAL WHEN APPLIED TO AN ORGANIC FORM
VISCOSITY: STERIOTOMIC TABLETOP OBJECT
These forms were my original material studies and part of the inspiration for the chair, made from sculpted spray foam insulation, penny tile, adding construction screws and nails as accents. I wanted to explore how sheets of tile, something that is normally very linear, could be applied to an extremely organic surface.
INSPIRATION BOARD
After creating Viscosity, the tabletop objects I wanted to challenge myself
and explore the same process at a much larger scale.
I decided to use black, cream, and white tile and make a design reminiscent
of these inspiration images.
SKETCHES
PROCESS
Once I decided on a general design I drew a more refined sketch of the chair, labeling each color and its placement. I made the chair base that would support the spray foam out of plywood with copper pipe legs.
FOAM
Once the base chair was built I had to cover the entire thing in spray foam so that I could shape it to match my drawing. I started with pink foam for the bulkier areas and then moved to spray foam. Once the foam was laid out I hand placed tile to cover the surface.
EROSION CHAIR
The final chair took 10 bottles of spray foam, and over 25 sheets of 1'x1' penny tile to make.
