During our team meal, observing was the main scope of our design process from the beginning. After observing and taking notes of the lunch room for a few minutes, we started to see some of difficulties that students were having. In some of the cases, some of the students would come to the lunch room by themself and almost seemed as though they were being rushed. Another thing that we could see was how so many students had to make two trips just to be able to put down their plates because there was no solution to the problem. Not quite yet decided on what our team solution was for the dining hall, we decided to split up and come up with observations and ideas on our own during the individual meal reflection.
Food bar that sends students in a balanced line to keep it flowing equally on both sides.
Layout of the dining hall has a unique style to it them some students find to be pleasing and others find to be old.
Cups that are stacked up and presented to students to grab.
Refreshments of different types of drinks for the students.
Cereal section of the dining hall.
Ketchup/mustard section with bananas and begals next to them.
Survey box allows students of the dining to be able to give their feedback to the cooks and other staff members.

Bob
Looking at the dining hall from an individual perspective is a little different. I came back to the dining hall at a different time of the day than our team did. You can still see some of the same problem similarities within the dining hall. After asking a couple people about some ideas to better make the dining hall, I got some really good feedback. Not a lot of people were that big of a fan towards the phone app idea. Some people that it would be cool to have food stations around campus but not so realistic. Majority of people loved the idea of having a To Go Box option that had the dining hall experience instead of a sack lunch in a time crunch situation.

Jeni
For my individual meal I went to Selleck during lunch time. I noticed that there were several people that got their food, rushed to their seat, and ate really fast. This made me think that a to-go box would be a really good idea. I asked people at the table next to me what they thought about this idea and they agreed that it would make there day go smoother. I also asked them about the delivery system idea and they weren't really a fan of that idea because they are never in their room. So from my individual meal, I came to the conclusion that a to-go box would make the lives of on the go college students easier.

I spent my individual meal at Haper dining on multiple occasions. It was interesting to watch what people did for a routine. I thought the individuals that sat alone were very distinct with what they were there for. You often catch them going to the dining hall, getting food, and then leaving. I was curious to ask a few people about their routine and one thing I picked up was how hard it could be to find someone to sit with. I can agree with this because I dont know all of my friends' schedule and I hate sitting alone. So I proceeded to ask if it would be convenient if you could take food out of the dining hall. A lot of people agreed that this would be a solid addition to the meal plans of UNL because not everyone wants to go and sit down in the cafeteria.

Many people seem in a hurry to be out of the dining hall and eat for less than a half of an hour. The dish return is not used in a proper fashion. Many people almost run into each other as they are walking in opposite directions. There is not much socialization in the dining hall. Most tables only have one or two people at them. There is a big rush between 20 after the hour and 30 after the hour

When I went on my individual meal I noticed a variety of things. I had my meal at Selleck Hall and observed the vicinity for about 30 minutes. One of the first things I noticed was how a large number of people sit at ta table by themselves. For the most part it seemed that the reason behind this was that they sat down and ate for only about 10 minutes and promptly left afterwards. It seemed like people were rushed to eat. When I asked people what they thought about the dining halls, nobody really mentioned anything about a to-go box, but what I noticed was that the phrase “When I have time…” came up a lot when I asked people eating. When I suggested the idea of the to-go box to students, they all seemed in favor of the idea, but a couple of them noted how some students might abuse the system. It seemed like more people were short on time when eating at Selleck since it is closer to a lot of classes and they did not have time to walk to any of the other dining halls.

Compiled Notes
The individual reflections from the dining hall were a success. Each of the group members were able to take bits and pieces from their individual meals and we were all able to put them together.
We as a group believe that observing the lunch room multiple times and from different perspectives is very important.
DEFINE
INSIGHTS / OBSERVATIONS
Cost of Meal Plan
One of our interviews was with a sophomore named Roger. His main complaint was with the cost of the meal in the dining hall.  We propose that a to-go box could be an option. Because the box would limit the amount of food consumed from the dining hall, the plan would cost less.  We would like to create a new meal plan where the students could just chose this plan, but they would also have the option of having the dining hall experience if they choose to have it.

Advertisements
To cover the cost of the take-out boxes we could ask RSOs and Sororities/Fraternities to pay for advertisements on the boxes. This would eliminate the extra cost of the box itself. This suggestion was made by one of the students at Selleck. The RSOs and Sororities/Fraternities currently pay for advertisements on the dining hall tables.

Taking Food Outside of their meal plan – Tray/ To-go Box
In order to prevent people from taking food outside their meal plan, we would give them a tray if they are staying or a to go box if they are leaving. This would make it more noticeable if people were filling up the to-go box and taking it to the table and eating and then filling it up again and leaving. A tray would make it more obvious than just a plate.

Locking Them Out/ Husker Hoagie
To prevent students from coming in again after getting to-go boxes, we suggest that the card scanning program be modified so the dining attendant could enter "eat in" or "take out."  If the student chose a to-go box, the program would lock them out for that meal similar to the n card scanning system at husker hoagie.

Incorporate Sheet From Selleck
They already have a to-go meal plan implemented, but it is only a sandwich. As stated in our POV, we want the students to be able to take advantage of the full menu in the dining hall.
POV STATEMENT

Students with a limited amount of time between classes/activites need a quick way to take the full dining hall menu out because he/she does not have time to sit and eat a meal.
IDEATE
During the brainstroming process, our team was able to come up with a variety of ideas to expand on. When looking deeper into each project, we started to narrow the gap down to a few different ideas that could potentially be a possible problem solution. We learned that addressing the problem correctly can greatly help decide the problem solution needed.
MIND MAP
With our mind map, we were able to seriously look into five different main ideas ranging from having a deliver system for UNL dining food, a phone app, food stations around campus, and the To Go Box! After expanding on some of the important parts of each of the ideas, you started to see that the To Go Box was the only idea that was fulfilling the dining hall requirements that we obtained from the students themselves.
PROTOTYPE
SERIES OF PROTOTYPES
The original box prototype had a flat lid that would fold in from both sides. It had three separate compartments for food.
The base was kept the same. The lid was modified to seem symmetrical to the bottom of the box. This extra room in the top was converted to hold a disposable spoon and fork that would pop out of the box.
Then a place for an advertisement was added to the side of the to go box in order to raise funds for the production of the box.
The box then had an empty slot added into the lid so that more food could fit into the box. In order for that to happen the disposable silverware had to be taken out of the lid.
FINAL VERSION
For the final design of the box several features were changed or added. One feature that was changed was curving the part of the lid that fits into a base inorder to make sure that the lid could be folded into the base. Another change that was made was putting a bump into the slot in the lid so that fruits or other items that are placed into the lid will not fall out. The design allows for there to be advertisements as well as the logo on the box.
