This is a cover studies for a book project on General Artemio Ricarte. The central theme of the book is about the dual nature of man. I played around the concept of duality to get different ideas for visual expression of the cover of the book.
Vibora as the Spanish word for snake/serpent, I created a snake skin graphic pattern and had it on an alternating black and white color motif. The used of snake/serpent and colors (black and white) represent dual expression of its nature.
Ricarte represented two nations, the Philippines and Japan. The cover was inspired from the flags of the two nations, overlaying the main shapes and outlines of each flags to create an expression of duality. Recognizable flag colors from each nation were used and also black and white to express duality.
A blurring effect was used in a photo of Ricarte to convey the idea of duality.
