DRUK:
THE THUNDER
DRAGON

The Druk is the "Thunder Dragon" of Tibetan and Bhutanese mythology. In Western mythology, dragons are fire breathing, treasure-hoarding creatures to be feared and killed by knights in shining armour. But in Oriental mythology, dragons are magnificent symbols of fertility and wisdom and power.

In 2019-20 I was fortunate to live and work in Gangtok, Sikkim of northeastern India. Waking up to see the majestic Kanchenjunga peak every day (almost), experiencing their fascinating cultural traditions, rich heritage add to the natural beauty of the heavenly Himalayan kingdom.

During my days in Sikkim, I grew closer to their culture and traditions, and I used to sketch random subjects and stories I came across every day (well, almost). This artwork is one of those, inspired by Cham dance, a lively masked and costumed dance associated with some sects of Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhist festivals.
