Surviving 2020: The Year in Cocktails

You’ve probably heard 2020 described in terms that have become cliche—chaotic, exhausting, lost, unprecedented, and of course, dumpster fire. Looking back at tougher times, many recalled Winston Churchill's advice: "If you're going through hell, keep going." Viewing this encouragement through a creative lens we found a positive way forward in the form of creating art and crafting beverages, not always in that order. Cheers!
January: Lemonade
Okay, not a cocktail but truly symbolic of 2020. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. An enduring lesson for just about everything that would take place this year.
February: Margarita
You might think that we'd save this one for Cinco de Mayo, but we discovered pre-quarantine that February 22nd is National Margarita Day. So we celebrated accordingly. Salud!
March: Quarantini
Covid-19 changed our world in March. But we found that a virtual Happy Hour was a fun way to catch up with those we missed. And adding a little vitamin C to your beverage can only help, right?
April: The Bee's Knees
So we're staying home, washing our hands and keeping our distance. How about a little positive reinforcement with a touch of honey? Just be careful not to get too buzzed.
May: Gin & Tonic
With the Kentucky Derby and Indy 500 postponed, we turned to a classic favorite for cheer. Gin & Tonic seems like summer in a glass, something to enjoy when spending most of your time in your own back yard.
June: Mojito
Rum, soda, lime juice, sugar and a little mint muddled in the bottom of the glass. What's not to like about a Mojito on a warm summer day? Nada, that's what.
July: Daiquiris
When looking for a little summer fun we love options. Whether you like a classic in a shaker or a fruity-festive version in the blender, Daiquiris are a vacation in a glass.
August: Mai Tai
While on this sweet summer kick we had to get a bit tropical, going all in on rum and fruit. For us the Mai Tia happened on our only 2020 safety-conscious road trip . . . to Michigan. At least we were near the water.
September: Mint Julep
With the rescheduled Run for the Roses we turned to this iconic Derby Day drink. The Mint Julep embodies the spirit of the Derby and inspired our wager choice, giving us an "Authentic" winner.
October: Zombie
Halloween may be Ms. F60's favorite holiday so to celebrate we conjured up the spookiest of drinks. One of our favorite versions is from the Tiki Bar at La Revolucion in Fountain Square. They’re fire, literally.
November: Old Fashioned
Mild weather plus an election and Thanksgiving that were anything but normal sent us looking for some Old Fashioned comfort. Time to relax and get into the holiday spirits. (wink)
December: Manhattan
At this point we can see light at the end of the tunnel. A new year is just around the corner. Life getting back to normal might include the simple pleasure of a Manhattan with a nice, big, red cherry to top it off.
Thank you
Wishing you more of whatever keeps you going and raises your spirits, be it a cool cocktail, a warm hot chocolate, or anything in between (stay hydrated people). We look forward to meeting for coffee or grabbing a drink together, in person, some time in 2021.
