Lake Erie Summer Storms

Storms move rapidly from west to east across the western basin of Lake Erie (Ohio, USA), in many cases they last less than an hour.  These shots were all taken along the walking path at Lakeside, Ohio.  When they move across off-shore, safely witnessing lightning displays is possible and spectacular.

While lightning is always of interest, the variety of the cloud formations makes each shot completely unique.  The contrast between bright sunny days and extreme weather (high winds, heavy rain and lightning) can be a part of a summer vacation day.

Shots were captured using a Lightning Bug™ infrared sensor/camera trigger.  In many cases, high f/ stop and neutral density filters are required to increase exposure times to allow capture.  The images were recorded using a Canon 6D and either a 24-105 mm or 14 mm lens.
