The Real Zebos - 2020 Cover Artwork
Following release of our 2019 album Strictly Platonic, we decided to go the route of releasing a steady stream of singles in 2020 (with the virus, this turned out to be the only thing we could do).
I wanted the artwork to follow a cohesive template, but allow room for the songs’ individual personalities to shine through.
This style, with the black backgrounds, bridged the gap between our black and pink Strictly Platonic aesthetic, and whatever may come next. I was inspired by vintage movie posters, using high-contrasting shadows as a base, and letting custom typography loudly announce the title of the song.
Just Drive
An uptempo dance rock jam with a bassline indebted to none other than Sly Cooper. The cover art and music video take cues from film noir and mid-century spy movies. Listen here.
Nectarine
A sugary-sweet 60s pop tune with a surprise acoustic campfire b-side "Tangerine" attached. The cover art features an abstract (nectarine? tangerine?) fruit in the shape of yin and yang symbol to represent this duality. Listen here.
Out of Touch
A sunny surf-rock song the bounces between modern garage punk energy and a 60s swing ballad. As a song about losing touch with someone moving away, this art was inspired by art deco travel posters. Listen here.
High Tide
A garage rock song with flamenco rhythms and plenty of riffin'. The artwork for this one basically writes itself. Listen here.
Zombie
A spooky funky pop song, perfect for the Halloween season. This might be my personal favorite typography out of all of these. I let the type be the focal point with a subtle face on the bottom. Listen here.
Fake Jewelry
A bright and shimmery synth pop song made for the summer. This artwork was inspired by vaporwave imagery and pixel art, with some 80s shopping mall neon type to match. Listen here.
