Character Design
Made by:
Mayke van Druten
This term we were presented with a very fun, and very challenging new assignment that got us all excited for the end results. This term we were given the assignment to make our own original character. During our last term we made a small character biography during our English classes that we will use now to make our character design.

The teachers explained everything in the first lessons about the workflow of sketching our character out and what we can expect in the next few weeks.

Character Idea:
My character idea is based of an illustration I made in the last term for 2D Game Art. This illustration gave me the idea of a whole universe and including with that a new character.

If your are interested in the process of this illustration, you can find it on my Behance Page under the name: "Desert of Time"
Source of inspiration for this Character Design

Mood board:
So the first step of this workflow is to make a mood board that fits our idea of the character. I went with a desert/traveler style mood board.

Silhouettes / Gray-Varients:
After we assembled our mood board we had to make a total of 9 different silhouettes. This was a big challenge for me thus the reason I made more than 9 silhouettes to get a feel for this kind of style.

Character Sheet:
After we finished our initial design we started with making our character sheet which would help us in the process of modeling our character.

Block Out:
After finishing the drawing design we had to start with the 3D model. We started out in Maya where we had to make the block out of our character

Sculpting:
With the 3D block out done, it was time to jump into Zbrush and sculpt the face and details into the model. This did prove to be a challenge for me as I had no prior experience in sculpting and Zbrush. This lack of knowledge and experience is visible in the end product.

Texturing + End result:
After I made the sculpture of my character I exported it to Substance painter where I started experimenting with textures.

Final Thoughts:
All in all, I learned alot during this term, but I am not happy with the end result. I knew too little about Zbrush in order to create a good sculpted face. I have still much to learn until I can visibly improve.
