H.P. Lovecraft foi o autor responsável pela criação do Horror Cósmico, ou Cosmicismo, uma filosofia e gênero literário que se baseia na insignificância humana perante o divino e o desconhecido. É sob esse aspecto que Dagon é pautada, sobre os relatos de um homem cuja sanidade já foi perdida, deixando dúvidas sobre a veracidade de sua história e sobre as origens e propósitos do desconhecido. Foi pensando nas possibilidades de adaptação deste clássico de Lovecraft que nós fizemos este artbook como parte avaliativa da disciplina de Planejamento Visual III, ministrada pela professora Turla Alquete, do curso de Design Gráfico - IFPB.

H.P. Lovecraft was the author responsible for the creation of Cosmic Horror, or Cosmicism, a philosophy and literary genre that is based on human insignificance before the divine and the unknown. It is in this respect that Dagon is guided, on the reports of a man whose sanity has already been lost, leaving doubts about the veracity of his story and about the origins and purposes of the unknown. It was thinking about the possibilities for adapting this Lovecraft classic that we made this artbook as an evaluative part of the discipline of Visual Planning III, taught by Professor Turla Alquete, from the Graphic Design course - IFPB.

Pelo conto ser uma espécie de diário em primeira pessoa, nossa adaptação tem como finalidade representar uma situação onde o autor escreve e rabisca suas próprias memórias. A escolha de cores das páginas foram definidas através da ideia de retratar sua loucura, onde as primeiras páginas em branco retratam o começo do relato e as páginas pretas subsequentes representam o momento em o narrador começa a perder sua sanidade. Além disso, para retratar o entorpecimento que o personagem relata provocado pela morfina, as ilustrações seguem cada vez mais um estilo abstrato e, em páginas pretas, novamente, se mostram em conjunto com os efeitos do químico perdendo efeito, ao passo que o narrador volta a sentir-se perturbado com as lembranças de suas próprias experiências.

Because the story is a kind of first-person diary, our adaptation aims to represent a situation where the author writes and scribbles his own memories. The choice of colors for the pages was defined through the idea of portraying his madness, where the first blank pages portray the beginning of the story and the subsequent black pages represent the moment when the narrator begins to lose his sanity. In addition, to portray the numbness that the character reports caused by morphine, the illustrations increasingly follow an abstract style and, on black pages, again show themselves together with the effects of the chemist losing effect, while the narrator returns to be disturbed by the memories of his own experiences.

As ilustrações foram feitas digitalmente, mas simulando técnicas tradicionais de pintura, com cuidado especial para evitar a repetição das texturas comumente associadas à pintura digital e mantendo um realismo consistente. A rigidez bruta e textura dos pincéis secos foram escolhidas por melhor representar de forma visual à instabilidade mental do protagonista, o estilo, porém, se altera ao longo da história, gradualmente transitando de uma forma representativa direta para um traço expressionista mais abstrato, tendo sua transição mais importante no momento onde o dia vira noite, marcando o início da degradação mental.

The illustrations were made digitally, but simulating traditional painting techniques, with special care to avoid the repetition of textures commonly associated with digital painting and maintaining consistent realism. The raw stiffness and texture of the dry brushes were chosen because they better represent the protagonist's mental instability in a visual way, however, the style changes throughout history, gradually moving from a direct representative form to a more abstract expressionist line, having its most important transition at the moment when the day turns into night, marking the beginning of mental degradation.
