Research and Inspiration I

For my book unit I aim to continue with the idea I started to develop in the Sony unit last term. Looking at people that have specific spaces where they work particularly those who are still working and have been through the COVID-19 pandemic.

A great source of visual inspiration for me for this project is Jenny Lewis' project Hackney Studios. These images fit the aesthetic and contextual theme of my project, particularly as the project also became a book. I want to try and get my hands on a copy to use in some idea generation for design and layout of my final outcome.
Charles Freger
Towards the end of last term Geraint introduced me to the work of French portrait photographer Charles Fréger, a lot of his work centres around environmental portraiture and the consistency in such a vast body of work spanning and entire career is impressive to say the least. I consider a lot of the work to be very 'clinical' for lack of a better word. Particularly in the series Bleus de Travail loosely translated to work overalls, which is probably the most directly relevant to my project.

I think my vision for the project leans far more towards a warmer Hackney studios style approach, however there are a few useful take aways from Fregers work. In the image of the nurse (top right) the use of background elements to paint a picture of this person and their profession is great, the line of 4 plastic chairs, disposable blinds and high gloss floor all immediately let you know this is a hospital.

This aspect of the images is important for me as I think its something I executed well in the last set. If I end up shooting some more obscure professions I think I will need to pay particular care to the background elements to ensure that the story is told clearly.
