Hero Factory - Material Research | Summer Semester 2013

The Hero Factory Toy Store is a form-finding investigation that was held by Studio Sandra Manninger in March 2013, and was continued into the Summer Semester of the same year. The project began with my studio partner, Xochitl Melendez who developed the original form for the site. My contribution to the project focused on material research and eventually proposed detail solutions of the structure. The material of choice for the structure's skin was silicone. The project is still in progress as a personal project.

Selected toy, the Lego Hero Factory Toy XT4 and how it is applied as a form-finding solution by Xochitl Melendez.
Comparison between the two main materials we considered - Silicone vs. FRP. This summary of information was accumulated after reviewing other similar investigations in the field.
Surface analysis used to investigate possible ways of 'packing' the panels in a modular sequence. Looking at base shapes - circles, hexagons, etc.
Conceptual sketches of possible details to consider using silicone panels on a steel frame structure.
Initial sketch model of the overall volume on site.
