"Penumbra:  A partial shadow between regions of complete darkness and complete illumination."

My works for the Penumbra show are all inspired by mythology, witchcraft, the occult, and fantasy in an attempt to explore the balance between light and dark, good and evil, and the grey area in-between.  I've always found it interesting how previous experience can affect viewer perception.  When you start bringing terms like "witchcraft" or "occult" to the table, it seems to bring up evil and negative associations for most people.  What were to happen if we approach imagery from these realms, tales and practices without prejudice or cultural influence?  I found that this world could be quite beautiful and powerful while remaining dark and mysterious at the same time.  Further research unraveled a rich and involved history.  Characters traced back to their most archaic beginnings revealed themselves to once be revered patrons, often banishing evil themselves.  Practices with roots in Nature Worship over time are warped into devilry.  At the heart of everything, I found that these things where not so black and white.  They embraced the good and evil aspects in the very nature of the world, and in turn - ourselves.  I wanted to attempt to bring some of this "to light" so to speak, to bring these things out of the shadowy depths and back into that area of in-between.
