Natura Morta 01
These works represent an ongoing exploration into the process of creating still life photographic images inspired by the paintings of Dutch and Flemish Baroque masters. The arrangements were created by the Pittsburgh florist and painter Thommy Conroy. The images were photographed on expired Polaroid 4”x5 film to achieve the unnatural color gamut and painting-like tonality. The scanned positive images were then retouched and printed on an inkjet photo printer. The final images were created via a process which involves several transformations of the original photograph from an analog to a digital state, involving a substantial amount of chance. Due to the shelf life of expired Polaroid film there are sections of the images that disappear or become barely perceptible. By using this method the goal was to create a conversation around the relationship of photogrpahy to painting and highlight the impermanence of the subject and medium.
