Wild Critters
3D AR Installation.
Part of Singapore Art Week, Wild Critters is an Augmented Reality Art Walk taking over Gillman Barracks, one sneaky critter at a time. 5 artists and collectives - Tell Your Children, Machineast, SuperCyberTown, ClogTwo and BÜRO UFHO - each create a fictional endangered critter that lives across 5 different habitats in the district of Gillman Barracks.

Singapore Art Week returns for its 9th edition to transform the city into a vibrant canvas of possibilities, showcasing quality visual arts projects, discussions, and exhibitions to a local and international audience. Wild Critters draws on the idea of mythical endangered species, often hidden from sight, hence spotting one leaves most of us in bewilderment.

Concept.
Augmented Reality opens up the ability to create larger than life art installations. Our idea is to make use of the virtual spaces as much as possible. Given a set of possible locations to work with, we created some initial sketches to conceptualize location-specific poses that interacts with the surrounding environment.

About Artur.
Artur - an anagram from Ur AR Art, derives from Roman (Artorius, King Arthur), Celtic (Artos, meaning bear), and Old Norse (Arnthor, meaning eagle, and the God Thor). Artur is a massive Bear-like creature, who hangs around galleries and museums. The last of its kind, Artur the Giant enjoys consuming Artworks, though he often seems to have digestion problems.
He enjoys and ‘tastes’ an exponential number of Art ‘dishes’ by feasting off people's imagination when experiencing Art. Artur embodies a childlike curiosity, and is able to uncover the root cause of any situation, simply by asking “why?” enough times.

Process & Development.
To keep the file size small to work within Spark AR's polygon limitations, we modeled our character from the ground up, optimizing and balancing between poly counts and surface smoothness.
We integrated Mixamo's library of character animations, customizing them to create our looping animated story.
Our mythical AR creature is first awaken by the viewer like a genie in a lamp, performs a thank you dance, waves goodbye, and goes back to his slumber.

Audience were able to interact with them through an Instagram AR filter on their mobile devices, allowing them to capture their encounters with these critters and share it on social media. The best 5 Instagram story creators received a set of 6 specially designed face masks by the artists.
