Our assignment was to select one simple, everyday object. The object should be easy to recognize and understand, as well as have a specific purpose or be useful in some way. Develop one visual concept for each of the creative strategies using your chosen object (for a total of seven different images using the same object).

I chose a desk lamp.

Objective

Visually represent a simple, useful object of your choice through the lens of each of the 7 Creative Strategies. This exercise will familiarize you with a helpful framework for developing creative design solutions to express meaningful ideas. These strategies should become well understood so they can continue to be practiced and employed in future projects.

7 Creative Strategies

Combination: This strategy is about bringing together two different/unrelated things to create a new object that still makes some sort of sense.

Juxtaposition: This strategy is more about contrast, i.e. showing the differences between two things rather than their similarities.

Isolation: This strategy focuses the viewer on an element in a composition by separating it visually from its surroundings or other objects.

Metaphor: This strategy is focused on the meaning of the image created with your object as it relates to something else.

Change of Context: This strategy contrasts objects with unnatural or uncommon environments to highlight a concept or communicate an idea.

Physical Similarity: This strategy uses physical similarities to showcase connections between objects that normally don’t connect.

Material Swap: This strategy swaps a material property that we are accustomed to with another.
