RNZ ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20

RNZ / Radio New Zealand  2020
ANNUAL REPORT: Print + Digital

Design Brief (extracts): “RNZ is keen to build on the excellent stakeholder response to last year’s document. The format for the 2019/20 RNZ Annual Report will follow closely the successful design. The theme, He waka eke noa, will reflect the importance of RNZ a public media service in times of crisis – this to acknowledge the role RNZ played and the audiences achieved during COVID-lockdown.

Innovation, Collaboration, Inclusivity. These words underline our objectives into the future –
they should be reflected in the report.”

I expressed RNZ’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in their 2018/19 publication. 2020 saw a greater focus on ‘Inclusivity’ and acknowledging our Pasifika communities. This resulted in a lighter, brighter colour palette and continued with “a modern, contemporary feel with emphasis on the positive forward looking approach that RNZ is taking to its strategic planning.”

During my initial presentation, we established a visual narrative of the HOE (waka paddle) running throughout the editorial pages. Thus representing RNZ’s strategy and governance over the last financial year. This evolved from a cover design concept in which I utilised the hoe as a symbol for working together, to move forward in a positive direction – requiring strength and unity.

The cultural appropriation of these designs, including the Hoe, were formally approved by RNZ's Kurahautū Māori team.
