Overview
In a world filled with ordinary gift-giving experiences, I embarked on a creative endeavor to design kinetic packaging that would redefine how we gift. Tasked with this exciting challenge by a discerning client, my goal was to not only wrap their custom made cupcakes elegantly but also infuse the act of unwrapping with a touch of magic and wonder.
Concept
My concept was simple yet innovative: design packaging that comes to life when opened. Inspired by the enchanting world of automata and the anticipation of discovering hidden treasures, I set out to create an experience that would leave a lasting impression on both the giver and the recipient.
First Prototype
Design Elements
Interactive Mechanism: I meticulously engineered the packaging to incorporate a concealed kinetic mechanism. This mechanism, triggered upon opening, elegantly revealed the gift, turning the act of unwrapping into a mesmerizing performance.
Elegant Materials: To complement the kinetic element, I handpicked high-quality materials, from Pine MDF board , choice of color and gold foil, each chosen to enhance the tactile and visual experience bringing in a element of surprise.
Custom Graphics: I crafted custom graphics and illustrations that not only adorned the exterior but also played a vital role in the kinetic reveal, further enhancing the storytelling aspect of the design.
Execution
Every step of this project was a labor of love. I carefully handcrafted each package, ensuring that every detail met my exacting standards. The assembly process blended traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering techniques, resulting in flawless outcomes.
Assembly process: I was blessed to work with some amazing manufacturers to turn my imagination into reality.
- MDF Pine boards were carefully spray painted to a dark indigo color.
- MDF pine boards were laser cut and different pieces were kept in separate containers to minimise the margins of error.
- The top 4 wing parts were segregated and screen printed with gum and later on gold foil was applied over the printed area, later on excess gold foil was removed using brushing techniques.
- Once dried each and every box was assembled from ground up, base, inside grid, center gear and wings with stoppers respectively.
- The cupcakes were received on the last day and were each assembled and delivered to the client on the day of celebration.
Outcome
The final result exceeded my expectations, and my client was thrilled with the end product. As recipients opened their gifts, their faces lit up with wonder as they uncovered the hidden surprise within the kinetic packaging.
Impact
My kinetic packaging design not only served as a luxurious vessel for the client's products but also elevated the entire gifting experience. It sparked conversations on social media, with recipients enthusiastically sharing videos of the mesmerizing opening sequence, significantly boosting the brand's visibility. My packaging was distributed amongst 1000 multiple clients by My main client's business.
