John Hopkins School of Mechanical Engineering Logo

Summer 2019 I was contacted to design a logo image for Johns Hopkins School of Mechanical Engineering.
The School of Mechanical Engineering had recently voted on a student design which would become the concept for the new logo, and I was entrusted to add that last bit of polish to create a refined version.

Retaining the blue jay in flight from the student concept, the challenge was to clearly show different stages of prototyping: concept, 3D model, and fabrication.
The first round of drafts focused on how to stylize the design. In the end, a more stylized organic form smoothly transitioning into a more simplified geometric look was chosen.
Once the vector was made in Adobe Illustrator, a background element to make the tail stand out more was suggested, building on the earlier sketch which hinted at the realized concept "breaking free" from polygons. While it helps the tail be more clear, the decision was ultimately that focus was unnecessary, and the design was kept clean and simple in the form that you see at top.

Thank you again to Steve Marra of the John Hopkins School of Mechanical Engineering for the opportunity for this project.
