New York is one of the richest fish faunas in the country. In its over 7,500 lakes and ponds and tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams, New York is home to more than 165 freshwater fish species. The state also has a long coastline harboring plenty of salty water fish species.

You can catch a variety of fish on a fishing trip in the state. Two of the most popular fish varieties are Brook Trout and Striped Brass. Brook Trout are small trout species native to the state that lives in freshwater. They thrive in small to slightly large streams and ponds where they feed on insects. You can catch them with flies, worms, minnows, and artificial lures. Other popular freshwater fish in the state are Yellow Perch and Pumpkinseed.

Striped Brass are great gamefish that live in seawater. They are big, aggressive, and can put up a fight. Many fall in the 20lbs range but they can grow up to 40lbs. They stay close to the seashore and often form schools. The best place to find Striped Bass is Long Island in the late summer, spring, and fall.

Other popular fish species in the state are Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed, Atlantic Mackerel, Weakfish, Bluefish, and Black Sea Bass. The first two are freshwater fish, the other three are salty water fish.
