UW-Stout Website and App UX Design

Campus Map is a project for the course DES-370 User Experience at UW–Stout. The aim of the project is to conduct competitive analyses and user research on the UW–Stout Campus Map website. This will help us determine red routes and establish user personas. Once the research is done, we will create a sitemap and paper prototypes to conduct Lo-Fi usability tests of a website and app. Then, we will design the layouts and conduct Hi-Fi usability tests. This project was done by Tjorven Landwehr, Haley Hahn, and Isabel Roberts.
My group made XD prototypes of both the website and the app. You can view them here:

Summary of Hi-Fi Usability Testing
- Users were able to complete all tasks successfully
- Users appreciated the clarity of the new designs
- Some issues technical issues came up with the XD prototype
- Improvements that came up:
         - Make the function of the map toggles more clear
         - Show which building the parking lots were closest to
         - Include home button throughout entire app
         - Add payment confirmation screens
Overall Outcomes
The new design of the UW-Stout campus map website and app makes it easier for users to find the information that they need.  We learned that a successful app and website cannot be identical. Our designs failed when we tried to put elements of the website directly into the app. We also learned through user testing that people use the app and website for different reasons and this influenced our designs.

We designed the website to provide an overview of campus and give users information about campus buildings. The main purpose of the app was to provide navigation and parking services. The website also provides parking services and the app also provides building information, but these are not the main purpose. Focusing the design of the site and app on one or two things makes the design less overwhelming for the user.

We also added some additional parking features, such as the scale that shows the capacity of the parking lots, a quiz that finds the best permit for you, and the ability to pay for permits and parking tickets directly in the app.
