Developing Practice

The Mini Project
Below is an excerpt from a magazine that I designed during my MA in Graphic Design at Middlesex University, London.
The idea was to visually describe the process that an artist would go through from the first stage of the brief to the final presentation.
Typically, a designer is given a brief, which is then taken to a notepad because those scribbles and rough sketches incubate to form the first drafts. These drafts are then edited, digitised, presented for discussion, edited, edited again, edited a little bit more, edited one last time I promise, presented once more and then edited with the finishing touches.
After this, our work is showcased onscreen or on print and no matter how many of these you may have done, it is always feels quite surreal to see one’s work published. This magazine is an attempt to scratch the surface by showing you a part, if not the whole, process of how a brief turns into a pretty piece.

The Brief
The class was asked to go out on a photowalk and turn our findings into something aesthetically pleasing through our craft.
For the second and equally vague brief, the instructor ordered, “Pick a couple of random objects lying around you, explore one of them and present the others beautifully.”

The Aim
The goal of this endeavour was to take vague and general requests and turn them into something… anything that is pleasing to look at while simultaneously exploring one’s artistic process.

The Style
The artwork showcases maximalist illustrations and a little bit of collage work. The digital drawings are in my favourite inking style that is reminiscent of vintage illustrations from old Victorian posters and storybooks with modern, bright and dreamy colours.

The Tools
Digital Drawings: Procreate
Finishing: Adobe Illustrator
