Context - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
The inspiration for this theme came from a photo I took in the countryside—an inverse old chair covered with moss. This photo has caused me to ponder about these worn-out objects. At the same time, after the end of this project, I did another photography project to continue discussing this topic.
Context - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
During my research, I went around many urban villages in Shenzhen and recorded them with camera. At the same time, I perused many works of Micheal Wolf and extracted a lot of elements from these photos, such as high contrast, bundling, pulling, and constantly developed these elements.
Context - Project 2/Typhoon Mangkhut:
Typhoon is the theme for my second project, the reason for which is that Shenzhen, a coastal city which is often affected by typhoons, is my place of birth. On average, Shenzhen is hit by one or two typhoons every year, of which the most destructive is Super Typhoon Mangkhut. It occurred in September 2018. First, it developed in the Pacific Ocean, then landed in the Philippines and swept through Guangdong Province, with a maximum intensity of 14.
Context - Project 2/Typhoon Mangkhut:
I searched a lot during my research, including the preparations people made before the typhoon, the scenes of the typhoon, the emergency measures before the typhoon and the recovery measures after the typhoon. What I found the most interesting was the pedestrians under the typhoon. The raincoats they were wearing and the umbrellas they were holding were blown into different shapes. I extracted these shapes and used them as one of the elements for my design. At the same time, I also learned that after Typhoon Mangkhut, tons of plastic once discarded in the sea by human beings were swept back to the mainland. As such, I also want to call on people to pay attention to protecting the environment through this project.
Context - Project 3/Metamorphosis:
The inspiration of this project came from a book called Metamorphosis, which records many stories about transformation, the most impressive story in this book is the legend of Daphne. She turned herself into a tree in order to escape the chase of Apollo, which she didn’t love. I searched a lot of information about this legend, and I found that there are many ancient legends about the transformation of people and animals or plants.
Development - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
On this page, I presented the extraction process of the shirring element and showed the fabric sample I made based on this element.
Development - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
Then I made some experiments with this sample on the mannequin, and used the extensions of these experiments to do some collages and sketches.
Development - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
I used another material of fabric but the same method to develop this element. In addition, to emphasize the element of high contrast, I adjusted some of the experimental photos to black and white.
Development - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
I selected some of the sketches on the previous page to develop into the line up, and I also recorded the process of toiling on this page.
Development - Project 2/Typhoon Mangkhut:
I used draping, sewing wire into waterproof fabric and TPU,and made some mannequin experiments. And I sewed the wire into the blue TPU with red thread as another sample. After that, I made a series of sketches concerning all the fabric samples and collages.
Development - Project 2/Typhoon Mangkhut:
I also used a new fabric which is unlike the tarpaulin. This kind of fabric is shinier and makes the garment more three-dimensional. Likewise, I added wire to this fabric to make the folds of the garment more pronounced. At last, I made some collage designs by combining the resulting forms of draping with hand drawing.
Development - Project 2/Typhoon Mangkhut:
Typhoon Mangkhut scraped the wall into pieces, which were scattered erratically on the ground like broken glass. I liked the texture that I extracted from the broken walls, so I drew some of the texture, cut up the plastic bags and sewed it onto the paper that I had drawn with markers to make fabric samples. Then I combined elements from the broken building with elements from the broken wall and made another fabric sample out of TPU, reflective fabric and tarpaulin.
Development - Project 2/Typhoon Mangkhut:
From my research, I mainly took two elements--different shapes of their raincoats and umbrellas, and the texture of the broken glass. I put those fabric samples on different parts of the mannequin. After trying for several times, I thought they would fit better on the collar and waist. I used the second element to make another fabric sample and combined it with the shapes from the previous research to make some collages and designs.
Development - Project 3/Metamorphosis:
Based on the illustrations in that book, I extended some hand-drawn drawings with different materials. At the same time, I also made some fabric experiments based on the extended illustrations.
Development - Project 3/Metamorphosis:
From the perspective of transformation, I made many hand-shaped fabric samples of different sizes using wet felt and wool as materials.
Resolved Work - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
This page shows the line up of the project. Inspired by the element of structure, I made an installation through assembling a huge frame and interlacing stretch fabrics in the frame
Resolved Work - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
In order to emphasize the element of high contrast, I decided to make two sets of clothes which do not have any color. Also, I used the installation as landscaping in the final shot.
Resolved Work - Project 1/Meditation in the chair:
This page shows the second set of clothes which mainly demonstrating the two elements of bundling and pulling.
Resolved Work - Project 2/Typhoon Mangkhut:
This page demonstrates the toiling, line up and fabric board of the project.
Resolved Work - Project 2/Typhoon Mangkhut:
This is the display of the final outcome. Before shooting, I remade a pair of shoes with the leftover fabric of the clothes and used it in the shooting.
Resolved Work - Project 3/Metamorphosis:
I drew the line up based on the sketches from the collages on the previous page. On the left side of the picture is my process of determining the colors, fabrics and the order of each set.
Resolved Work - Project 3/Metamorphosis:
This page is a backpack that I designed as an extension of this project. It uses fabrics made of wet felt and different yarns. There are many ways to carry it, and I hope to reflect the theme of transformation through that.
Resolved Work - Project 3/Metamorphosis:
This page shows two different ways of carrying this wet felt backpack.
Resolved Work - Other Works:
Charcoal drawing, acrylic painting and creative drawing.
Resolved Work - Other Works
Landscape photography, mobile photography and portrait photography.
