Many of the world’s top scuba diving locations require expensive plane tickets to exotic countries. However, many aspiring divers don’t realize that the United States is home to a number of incredible dive spots. Avid diver Dr. Frank Roach Atlanta recently offered his favorite places to dive without having to pull out your passport.

“Many divers forget that there are plenty of coral reefs, vibrantly-colored underwater creatures, and incredible shipwrecks right here in the U.S.,” Dr. Frank Roach Atlanta said.

Dr. Frank Roach Atlanta stated that one of his favorite places to dive is located in Monterey, Calif. The Point Lobos State Marine Conservation Area is incredibly pristine because only 30 divers can access the spot per day. Once you’ve been approved to enter, you’ll enjoy visibility of up to 80 feet and sightings of leopard sharks, rock cod, abalone, seals, and more.

“Many people probably don’t think of Missouri as much of a vacation destination, let alone a diving state,” Dr. Frank Roach Atlanta added. “But the Bonne Terre Mine is one of the most memorable places in the country to dive.”

Dr. Frank Roach Atlanta explained that the Bonne Terre Mine has an incredible history. The three square miles of underground tunnels were abandoned when the mine no longer provided resources. 

When the miners fled, they turned off the pumps and flooded the entire mine. Here, you can dive amongst the shovels and picks left by miners, as well as 24 paths that will take you through offices, geology labs, a machine shop, ore cars, an elevator shaft, and so much more.

“Shipwrecks are popular dive locations, and Key West is home to some of the best in the world,” Dr. Frank Roach Dentist Atlanta said. “The USS Spiegel Grove is a spot for advanced divers that rewards them with vibrant corals and even more colorful fish.”

Dr. Frank Roach Atlanta explained that the ship sank in 2002 and landed on its side. Hurricane Dennis straightened the ship three years later, and it is now covered in corals and frequented by damselfish, surgeonfish, barracuda, and other marine life.

Dr. Frank Roach Atlanta finished by stating that incredible dives can be found across the country, from the shark tanks of the Denver Aquarium to shipwrecks off the coast of North Carolina and the frigid waters of Alaska.
