The Fall of the Titans
Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem/ 1588-1590 /

you can see original painting in National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen
“They’re falling down into Hell, and we see the light of the sun shining down into the abyss. The artist has used an almost science-fiction-like mode of expression. They seem to be tumbling straight out at us, and his use of colours and space sucks us into an infinitely deep space,” says Eva de la Fuente Pedersen. SMK

'A Young Girl Defending Herself against Eros'
William-Adolphe Bouguereau/ about 1880 /
source: Getty Museum

This one especially, surprised me a lot, how current it is. Maybe these days even more, in the era of Social Media and dating apps, or maybe nothing has changed actually through centuries?
Love has no date, gender or sexuality.
Description of the original: “A young nude woman sits with her arms outstretched, pushing away a winged boy. He is Cupid, the god of love, holding up an arrow to pierce her. The title suggests that the young woman is trying to defend herself, yet she smiles and struggles unconvincingly against the mischievous little god. (…)”

Study of a Model
Théodore Géricault/ 1818 – 1819 /
source: Getty Museum

Description of the original: “This portrait was made as a study for Théodore Géricault's most famous painting, The Raft of the Medusa, made in 1819 and now in the Louvre. In a clear case of ineptitude, the ship named Medusa foundered in the sea off the coast of Africa in 1816. A raft with 140 passengers drifted for thirteen days before being rescued; only fifteen people survived. In preparation for his disturbing and controversial painting of the incident, Géricault made many studies from life, like this one, to achieve a sense of realism and specificity.”
