Everyday wear and tear on furniture is a long term issue that even owners of quality leather sofas and chairs face. Leather tends to stretch over time. Furthermore, cracking can happen when the dye and protective top coating is added by the manufacturer prior to the hide being properly stretched.

Another issue has to do with the porousness of leather and its ability to soak up oil. Bare legs, arms, legs, neck, and even hair will add oil to the leather. The dirt will also soak into the leather as the top coating breaks down. Eventually, this turns abrasive and the surface dye is compromised, leaving behind visible surface cracks.

With fully-finished leather, avoiding such situations requires minimizing oil and dirt contact, as well as cleaning the leather three or four times annually. A well-formulated protection cream will fill in gaps in the leather and repel dirt and oil. If the leather cracks, a Fibrenew professional can either replace pieces of the leather or re-dye the surface, depending on the extent of the damage.
