M&S: X Factor - Taking Apart Motown

X Factor’s theme this week was ‘Motown’ (Week 10). I thought I’d put together how I create elements each week. We normally get the theme on a Tuesday (subject to change to keep me on my toes) and the final design is created by Thursday night. So I don’t get a lot of time and try to design elements as quickly as possible.
When I get the theme, I usually start by doing a google search, ebay search, amazon search… basically anywhere that I might draw inspiration from. I piece together elements and create a mood board.

My next stage is sketching and brainstorming. At this point the only supplied information I have is the theme, by the end of Tuesday I might receive some photos of what might appear on the page this week. So it’s very loose. I try to colour pick images that I have collected so create a colour scheme, and then try to recreate elements using Photoshop and Illustrator. I also look around for some tutorials to see how other web designers have created elements from just using vectors and photoshop techniques. My favourites have to be dribble.com, psdtuts.com, andAbduzeedo.com. So everything you see below is original work inspired by techniques used on these sites.
