New Year's Double 2013-2014

New Year's Double 5K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon 2013-2014
An Active Joe North Texas Race
UPDATE 07.11.14: The finisher's challenge plate was featured on the Runner's World website as one of the top ten Coolest Race Medals in the US. It's #6 if you care to check it out!

This is the third year of this race that features the opportunity to run back to back 5K's, half marathons, marathons, or any combination of those distances on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Runners who complete a race both days get not just individual finisher's medals, but the coveted Challenge Plate. The Challenge Plate is so sought after that there is typically a wait list to run both days as the race sells out nearly a month early every year.

Short and long sleeved technical shirts.
Shown: Back of the short sleeved New Year's Eve tech shirt, front of the long sleeved New Year's Day tech shirt (both shirts feature metallic silver ink on the front), 5k finisher's medals mounted on the challenge plate, and marathon/half marathon finisher's medals mounted on the challenge plate.
Detail of the marathon/half marathon finisher's medals and challenge plate set. Total weight is just over a pound of awesomeness. Medals are flush mounted with magnets.
5K medal detail. This year, the 5K started and ended before the start of the half and full marathons. Runners were given the option of doing a Double Double and earning both challenge plates.
"In Training" tech tee design. This is a popular pre-race purchase for runners who compete in any of The Active Joe series races.
As training for this race extends into the part of the year with the shortest days, we offered participants a violently orange "In Training" shirt in acknowlegment of the fact that they're often running in the dark.

This is one of the few races that offers personalized bibs to runners who register early. Each race distance has a different bib with the fastest corral participants given the option of wearing a "chaser" bib. The course is looped and the chaser bib allows runners to identify who their competition is when catching up from behind.
Age group and overall winners receive a champagne flute.
Fun side note: I have designed for and run this race every year since it started. Every year the race director offers to send me pieces for my portfolio and every year I instead decide to torture myself by running back to back half marathons. I like to earn my medals the old fashioned way: RUNNING! Additionally, the medals have gotten bigger and bigger. This beauty of a challenge plate is just over one pound once put together.
