The first impression we get about any space is formed based on the brightness and color of surfaces that constitute this space. From the ancient time, sunlight has been used as a means through which the temple architecture was expressed — the whole structure, with its design and plasticity, was commanded by the game of light and shadow. Silhouette, form, pattern and plasticity — none of these artistic effects exist without light and shadow.
The concept of the shadow contains an enormous amount of meaning. Besides its direct meaning as optical phenomena, it has many allegorical, metaphorical and idiomatic connotations that can be found in literature, art, philosophy and psychology. The shadow has always been an especially important concept to the southern and eastern nations, where it’s been recognized as a savior and protector that grants coolness and rest.
