Walking the Yamanote Line: People

Walking the Yamanote Line: People
Tokyo, September 2019
Some of the people I saw along the way.

The Yamanote Line is the overground train line that runs in a loop around central Tokyo.
Walking the Yamanote Line is a project of discovery. I explored Tokyo by walking along the streets closest to the train tracks. The route is a little over forty kilometers long.
Although the Yamanote line passes very close to some of Tokyo’s biggest tourist attractions, I wanted to discover the city on my own terms, trying to keep the course but occasionally getting lost and having to find the tracks again. By this, I hoped to understand Tokyo’s urban tissue a little better and get a sense of what it’s like to live here.
The night journey was surprisingly intimate. After the happy-hour rush, I shared the quiet streets with very few people.
This is a selection of photos from my Yamanote walk in September 2019.
