Problematic: the world wide decline of the bee population, more precisely the one around the city of Montreal. How can we get the people's agreement to get along with bees in the limited space of a city? 

 

    Problématique: le déclin des populations d'abeilles à travers le monde, mais en ciblant plus précisément la ville de Montréal.  Mais de quelle manière peut-on amener les citoyens à cohabiter avec une espèce sur laquelle nombres de préjugés persistent?

    The "tobogan" design of the flower pot was inspired by an iconic architecture particularity of Montreal, the staircases, in an effort to bring the design closer to the inhabitants of the city.

 

    Le design en «tobogan» du compatiment à fleurs s'est inspiré d'une icône architecturale de la ville de Montréa, ses cages d'escaliers, dans le but de rapprocher le design des gens qui l'entourent. 

      The idea behind Ru, the urban beehive’s concept, is to encourage the reintegration of bees in urban environments while improving their acceptance towards humans in response of the recent bee population decline. When opting for a more sculptural and audacious design in urban furniture, citizens tend to develop an attraction towards the object and a desire to have it within their city, therefore creating a tighter bond between themselves and the bees. The beehive would be installed in parks, on greenhouse roofs or other predetermined urban areas. The diffusion of the product would be limited to only ten copies serving as a reminder of the bees’ importance throughout the city of Montreal.

 

 

       L’idée derrière le concept de ruche urbaine Ru est de favoriser une réintégration des abeilles en milieu urbain tout en améliorant leur acceptabilité auprès de la population.  En optant pour un mobilier urbain au design sculptural et audacieux, on amène les citoyens montréalais à vouloir cet objet dans leur ville, les rapprochant ainsi des abeilles. La ruche serait installée dans des parcs, sur des toits verts ou des zones urbaines préderterminées. La diffusion serait limitée à une dizaine d’exemplaires qui feraient office d’ambassadeurs à travers la ville de Montréal.

       Ru’s concept is the first phase of a long-term plan in which its goal would be to further integrate these pollinators into our society. This plan would later result in the possibility of wholesale for residential purposes. For example, the residential models would let citizens possess a small beehive in their back yard. This urban accessory’s goal is to convince Montrealers that bees are a necessary component in keeping our biodiversity healthy.

 

       Le concept Ru est la première phase d’un plan à long terme qui vise une intégration plus profonde des pollinisateurs dans notre société et qui résulterait à la vente de produits commerciaux résidentiels permettant, par exemple, d’avoir une petite ruche dans sa cours arrière. Le mobilier urbain cherche à convaincre les Montréalais que les abeilles sont nécessaires à une biodiversité saine.
