History as a Battleground

Process of working on the cover of a book by Enzo Traverso, ''History as a Battleground'', published by FMK Knjige. First version had kind of a literal approach, with references to old battle maps, infographics, posters. Making book cover a battleground. Still, publisher thought that maybe it was ''too much''.
Second version was also expressive in its own way, with the ''monument'' as a front piece. So not battleground, but more like a former battleground. Monument to a past battle, with a fire approaching from the opposite angle - a hint of some new battle. This time, color scheme limit (red + black) didn't work well for the monument to be more recognizable. So we gave up on the monument as well.
Third and final version of the cover has clouds and bird in the main roles, together with arms, flags and torches in the front, like visual support to the title. Still not my favorite, although it looks better in print than on screen. And the process itself, although demanding, was primarily fun.
And here it is in print, in the company of a booklet from the Svici series, also by Enzo Traverso, and designed by Borut Vild. Photo source: FMK Knjige
This book is part of the edition ''Vreme Trešanja''. Check out the whole edition here
