В народной памяти она предстает то старухой с белыми волосами, способной защекотать путников до смерти, то грозной и веселой женщиной, которая может как помочь, так и погубить. Считалось также, что вирьавой может стать душа человека, пропавшего в лесу. Под влиянием христианства, этот образ стал все более напоминать Бабу-ягу.
