For my Innovation and Entrepreneurship course, my team was tasked with coming up with a new product and building a startup venture business plan around it. Each team member came up with three invention ideas, and through voting, we narrowed it down to six. From those six, my idea for an expanding shelved suitcase prevailed. Below is my initial design for the concept. The idea is that when opened, the shelves inside would expand, creating a shelving system that would make it simple for the user to store clothing and be able to access it easily afterwards.
After conducting some interviews based on our initial concept, we decided that we needed to rethink our design to better accommodate the needs of our target users. Below is the result.
A lid on the front allows easy access to a laptop when going through a security screening. The unique handle serves two purposes: carrying the bag and unlocking it with a simple twist of the wrist.
The suitcase opens to reveal a hanging space for some clothing items and additional space below for the rest of the clothing. This retains the easy access of the original idea while also keeping the design more compact and easier to use.
The lid transforms into a useful table for when waiting at the departure gate and also allows access to a toiletry bag underneath. The omnidirectional wheels allow for both straight and lateral movement, improving cornering.
After finishing the CAD model, I asked a classmate to serve as a model for the purpose of creating some images to simulate the use of the suitcase for the website. I used Photoshop to render the first image and the two below.
The last piece of work I did for this course was designing the logo for the company. We decided on a black and green theme, and I integrated the omniwheel into the logo since we felt it was an important aspect of our design. For a different course on visual processes, I decided to create an informational poster for the product, which can be seen below.
