Psychoanalysis and “Blackness”

                                                     Project Summary:
Works by psychoanalysts such as Lacan have long been known to be cryptic in nature, especially to those outside the world of academia. However, the studies conducted are topics that we can all relate to on an individual level. From Lacan’s concept of the mirror phase to Freud’s studies on the ego, the id and the superego, a certain line of critical thought can be drawn from environment and experience through their effects on the individual.

I believe these studies can be useful to people within communities where both environment and experience differ from those of the predominately white and clinically trained audience of psychoanalytic texts.

Throughout this illustrative graphic novel, I focus on Lacan’s mirror phase, simplifying his theory and others in a form that is more digestible and relatable to those within minority communities, ultimately introducing the world of psychoanalysis to a new audience and revealing how the environments of these communities effects the mind.
