Redesign - Uni of Durham Mountaineering Club Flyer

Redesign - University of Durham Mountaineering Club Flyer

BRIEF:

I created this flyer in just under two days as a favour for a friend of mine for Durham University's upcoming 2013 Fresher's climbing events.

I was given an example of the current flyer design (which I think was made using a fairly generic template - shown below) to extract the relevent information from.
The only thing I was told to retain in terms of composition was that the bottom third of the design had to be able to be cut off for students to keep.

CONCEPT & SOLUTION:
The original flyer design was quite drab-looking and had a misleading Olde-world/Pub aura to it, partly through the dark colour scheme which I felt did nothing to differentiate the flyer from any other that students would be bombarded with! It certainly didn't scream student to me!

For the redesign, I wanted the flyer to have a fresh, youthful feel to it to entice its target audience (18 - 21 year olds), whilst providing a fundamentally "outdoorsy" aesthetic. This was what governed my bright yet autumnal colour palette, which is intentionally seasonal in appearance according to when the events take place.
I created vector illustrations relating to the subject of mountaineering and the outdoors in order to communicate what the club was about efficiently. I wanted students to be able to recognise the content of the flyer immediately.

My main focus here was to depart from the dated, unfashionable image that I felt the original design gave to the club, so that it could be seen as current and fun.
THE ORIGINAL FLYER DESIGN I WAS GIVEN
MY FINAL REDESIGN
ALTERNATIVE TYPEFACE OPTION THAT, ULTIMATELY, I DECIDED AGAINST!
