Future Casting: Sonic Tasting
Framing Story:
In this future, sound has become an essential part of eating. People would know exactly what to play in order for them to change the way their food tastes. If they want their food saltier, they’d play soft music, if they want something sweeter, they’d play their favorite high pitched song. Restaurants have also incorporated this, but to an even more complex level.
With sound, chefs are now expected to not only know how to cook but also what sounds would highlight the tastes of the food that they make. Some chefs can even evoke certain emotions in their guests through the sounds that they play with food. Because of this careful crafting, many people actually want to eat alone in order to fully experience this. They know that background noises and interacting with others would distract them from fully concentrating on their food and the sound.
Framing Message:
Food is a sensory experience involving taste, sight, smell and now hearing as well. As we learn more about ourselves, we discover how complex we are but also how we are easily affected by so many external factors. Our perception of something could easily be changed and manipulated even without us realizing it.
Whilst this easy manipulation of our environment could potentially cause devastating consequences, one good and interesting way we could benefit from this knowledge is being more aware of how we eat as by involving sound while we eat, this enables it to become even more exciting and creative.
