To commemorate a three month road trip around Australia's Northeast, I designed a photobook integrating my photographs with my journal entries. I was so taken with the vivid colours and personality of the different landscapes that I wanted to honour these differences in the design of the book, so it is split into five colour-coded sections based roughly on the climate zones.

I paired an angular condensed font with a slab serif to reflect the often harsh conditions and jagged appearance of the landscapes I visited. I also used colours that were directly inspired by the dominant colours of the various landscapes.

The book is split in five to highlight the distinct visual landscapes. To keep the photos in the spotlight, it was important to not over-design the layout of the book. Most of the pages have plentiful white space and few design features so as not to distract. However the chapter title pages provide an opportunity to inject some of my own verbal and visual interpretations of the landscapes.

As the photos are from a challenging road trip where we travelled great distances through harsh and remote terrain, I wanted to showcase process as a theme in the book's layout. On multiple spreads I positioned the photos in a way to show the passing of time or my own photographic process as I looked at a scene from different angles, or to draw parallels between different landscapes.

To draw attention to a location or memory that I'm particularly fond of, I created a custom design for a quote page. Throughout the book, I didn't want the design to overshadow the photography, so in the design for this page I retained lots of white space and allowed the photo to take up most of the page.
