58 GENDERS I 2020
Facebook give its users 58 gender options to describe one’s identity. These objects are a representation of our society where only two genders (Male and Female) are recognized, when in reality there is a spectrum of multiple gender identities that people relate with. We are working with a surprise element of a rainbow accordion derived from LGBTQ flag which opens up beautifully to address the inclusivity of diversity in sexual orientations The idea of making them hidden is how the society operates and how these gender identities don’t get a proper representation in the society. The use of Terracotta and a Wood symbolizes the strong hold of Binary Gender Politics whereas Paper in the form of accordion is light and delicate .In the objects made ,we have also used stereotypes, recognizes symbols, sketches to highlight this issue.
This project was done in collaboration with Sarthak kathuria of NID ,Gandhinagar.
