Period Poverty in Tripura

Period poverty

is the lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints.
According to the report of Indian Ministry of Health, only 12% of menstruators in India have exposure to proper period products. The other 88% however, are sadly compelled to use materials as unsafe as rags, hay, sand and ash as their only alternatives! An average of more than 40% of students in India resort to missing school while menstruating. 1 out of 5 girls drop out of the school due to periods.

While these numbers lay thread-bare the abysmal lack of access to menstrual products across the country, the scenario in Tripura, too, is no different. In the smallest North Eastern state of India, Tripura, the issues concerning menstrual health are still shrouded in pseudoscience and taboos. Often neglected by mainstream media and popular discourse, the menstruators of Tripura, are still unable to get access to menstrual awareness, education and essential sanitary products. It is in this space where The Period Society Agartala strives to bring a positive change.

The Period Society Agartala

The Period Society Agartala is a Tripura based chapter to the gen-Z led global organisation - THE PERIOD SOCIETY. We, a group of highly enthusiastic volunteers, intend to raise awareness, dismantle the stigma, and enable greater access to menstrual hygiene products to the underprivileged.

The Period Society Agartala has set up a Milaap fundraiser with the aim of collection  funds through contributions for our year long drives. This fundraising is focused on distribution of sanitary products to the unprivileged people of Tripura. Link to the fundraiser is up on my bio. Please share and support our cause.
