Society and Sexual Objectification

The approach to this assignment was done by revisiting several magazines from the 40’s to the 70’s and noting the sexual objectification that these convey.  I decided to use collage as the medium of expression for we can see in a direct manner how we are “parts” of a whole.  The magazines are not from 2013 yet they are not far off in the information they show for now a days it is even more sexualized.  The idea of being the backbone of society as women and how society eats us up (hence the teeth) taking away our identity and just branding us and “reproducing” us as tools of marketing seems like an issue that needs to be discussed.  I learned that we are still in a constant battle for freedom, and respect.  The fact of sexual objectification brings with effects of self-objectification “depression, habitual body monitoring, eating disorders, body shame, depressed cognitive functioning, sexual dysfunction, lower self esteem, lower GPA, lower political efficacy, female competition” (The Sexy Lie. Dir. TED. Perf. Caroline Heldman. TED, 2013.) We need to be aware, we need to not see ourselves as sex objects, as objects in a whole.  There are ways then also to stop this “For girls: Stop consuming damaging materials, stop competing with other women/girls, stop seeking for attention for your body. For boys: be a supportive ally, don’t evaluate girls/women based on appearance, speak against objectification” (The Sexy Lie. Dir. TED. Perf. Caroline Heldman. TED, 2013.) So through this piece I want to show my discontent with the sexual objectification that is as real today as it has ever been.
