Senegal Elementary School – “Sambou Toura Drame”
Competition proposal
The Senegal Elementary School is designed to answer one of the main needs of the community, that of a proper place for its youth’s education. Te proposal finds its origins into the local art of colorful hand painted pirogues, element integrated into the building itself, as a way of paying tribute to this long-standing tradition, that became on of the country’s main landmarks. We reinvented the use of these boats as a structural building element, with the idea of keeping the soul of the local culture alive and as a way of educating the children about their traditions and origins trough the architecture itself.

The concept of the school is focused on creating a safe place for education, a fortress where the kids can safely explore their intellect and their childhood. The architecture has different attitutes, as an answer to the context. From the rough, raw exterior, that borrows the brown texture of the surrounding, the school slowly gains color as you get inside. The interior courtyard, the main recreational space, is designed to boost creativity with smoother, white plaster walls, hand painted by the kids and the teachers, a place full of life and joy, that will make education even more enjoyable. The entire layout is orientated towards this space, creating a playground completely close from the outside world.

According to the needs of the community the school is designed to shelter small animals and a vegetable garden that can sustain all the necessary food requirements of the students. All the materials, systems and assemblies were designed to be constructed within local availability and resources. Passive cooling, ventilation and on-site water incubation make the design a healthy space where the youth can thrive.

The library, a place of fantasy and magic, where everything its possible though every new story, is the main element of the design. As a way of inspiring the young minds that are being formed here, we repurposed the traditional, integrating 5 pirogues as part of its southern wall. They are not only used for decorative reasons, but are becoming an integrated part of the structure and a furniture element that offers a new perspective on the use of the damaged boats.

The entire design is thought as to teach the children the value of their culture and their traditions, but also to think outside the box.
