Nori: Safer In-door Play Environment for Children

Children are curious, inquisitive, and need to explore the world around them to develop skills for life. Living with children can be predictably unpredictable; there are many dangerous aspects in house environment threatening children. However, children are meant to be playful as it’s their nature. Evolving a better environment for children is essential, instead of changing their behaviour. Nori is intended to address child safety, particularly looking into the house environment.

‘Nori’ means ‘play’, ‘game’, ‘activity’, ‘amusement’, and ‘recreation’ in Korean. As the word ‘nori’ fundamentally implies the playful sense, Nori intends to provide an active indoor environment within the living room area where children can feel the space as a playground and joyfully interact with the product. Safety is also another critical aspect of Nori, as safety in the house environment is crucial for children. Ideally, there should be a balance between safeness and playfulness without leaning too much into one aspect, and discovering this standard point was a key argument of the project. Nori was able to overcome these challenges by undergoing various research, development, and prototyping. Therefore, Nori attempts to introduce a way for children to enjoy their play, but in a safer environment with the application of design elements.

Nori is a multifunctional couch that can turn into creative playground equipment such as a see-saw and slides using other modular parts. Utilising the modular features, children can assemble and disassemble every part and create their imagined playground using their own creativity. Lastly, Nori is safe, structurally sound, and utilises less harmful materials for children.
