Plant Packaging | Nurturing Green Packaging Design

Project Brief
To redesign the packaging of the plant nursery brand, Nurturing Green, ensuring security and protection of the plant in addition to providing an even display of the foliage.

Why do plants require packaging?
Indoor plant purchasing has become quite popular. Thus, much like any other commodity, selling and transporting of a plant requires appropriate packaging for its protection and security.

The transit of a plant from a nursery to a residence may be of short or long distances. In either case, something as fragile and delicate as a plant, requires not only a stable base, but also reinforcements at various junctions of the plant, like the stems, the mud at the surface of the pot, the flowers and leaves, etc. Keeping this in mind, it is safe to say that plants require more attention than other commodities when it comes to packaging; and the packaging is responsible for keeping the plant safe, secure and healthy.

About the Brand
Born in 2009, Nurturing Green is the pioneer in India to bring about and promote the concept of Green Gifting – “Gift a Plant”. The concept of gifting a plant was the adrenaline for this venture. The idea was to replace bouquets and other monotonous, traditional gifts with live plants.

The mission at Nurturing Green is to become a symbol of Green Gifting, Green Decor, Landscaping and related services in India. They seek to achieve this by inculcating a sense of responsibility in one and all towards our environment.

Current Packaging

Nurturing Green changes the visuals of their packaging according to seasons, festivals and occasions, however, the structural packaging remains constant. All kinds of plants are sold in this packaging. It consists of a large cardboard cuboidal box which is to be opened only from the topmost face.
Design Approach

The aim of this design project was to redesign an indoor plant gifting packaging which not only ensures the security of the plant within the packaging during transit, but also gives enough space for the foliage to spread out, making the packaging itself feel more organic and fresh. The packaging designed is specifically for gifting indoor air-purifying plants as part of the ‘UnPollute’ range of plants by Nurturing Green, which is an attempt to promote the adoption of plants with the aim of creating a pollution-free and healthy environment.

Four plants (proven air-purifying plants) were selected to be part of this indoor gift packaging:

Selected Packaging Design Concept

The packaging designed for the plants provides enough space for the foliage of the plant to spread evenly, and not be limited in a restricted and congested box space. There is generous empty space. This also enhances the fact that something ‘alive’ is packaged inside.

The package is proposed to be made out of environmentally friendly, biodegradable material and can be ripped up and sprinkled in the soil to provide the plant with extra nutrients which will help in the growth and lifespan of the plant.

Materials Proposed:
Recyclable and biodegradable Palm fiber (0.5-1mm thickness)
Polystyrene foam base and blocks
Flat cardboard (recyclable)
