The Mavericks bolstered its coaching staff on November 15 by signing Zach Guthrie to serve as an assistant to head coach Rick Carlisle. Guthrie previously worked as an assistant with the Utah Jazz and is replacing Stephen Silas, who earlier in the offseason was signed to serve as head coach of the Houston Rockets. The 32-year-old is considered an "offensive guru."
Guthrie grew up in a basketball family as his dad spent 26 years with the San Antonio Spurs. He graduated from the University of Texas in 2010 and worked briefly with the Spurs' G-League affiliate in Austin before joining the team in 2011-12 as an assistant video coordinator. He was hired by the Orlando Magic before the 2012-13 season to manage its scouting department and was signed by the Jazz in 2015.
