For nearly 30 years after graduating from design school, I worked as a designer for a company that mainly dealt with tableware and interior design products.
Most of the products were made of porcelain, and the manufacturer was located in a region far from Tokyo, where I worked.
My job was to design products that would sell well by incorporating the product concept into the design, and then conveying the drawings and designs to the porcelain manufacturers.
I think I worked hard every day to make the designs easier to communicate and more sympathetic to the customers.
In the early days, I drew drawings by hand on drafting paper, then 2D drawings on a computer, and then 3D CAD.
However, I think it was difficult to convey the image drawing of hand-drawn dyeing and patterns directly on the pottery. Not only to myself, but also to internal staff, manufacturers and clients.
But now, I am very surprised to see how much easier it is to convey the image.
I would like to share this experience with you.
The shape of the model is a simple sake cup.
This one is an original shape that makes use of the clean edges of porcelain, created with the software Rhinoceros. Save this as obj.

I used Adobefresco watercolors to paint the image of dyeing with the paint called gosu.
I was able to express the "dami" or blotchiness of the dyeing process with Fresco.

The patterns are arranged from old traditional patterns.
Finally, import the model created in Rhino in Dimension , and place and adjust Fresco's watercolor.
The result is an image closer to the product.

I found things that never change and things that keep changing.
Thank you for watching.
