Your West Coast
Caledonian MacBrayne
Double Take Projections demonstrated with this commission that we can project onto just about anything. We worked with Caledonian MacBrayne to mark their momentous 165-year-long tenure on the West Coast of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides. We projected at iconic locations around the west coast, showcasing some of the most stunning landscapes that the region has to offer. Our unique approach involved editing archive footage in composing the projected content. We adopted time-lapse techniques to film the projections with breath-taking results!
Scotland based Double Take Projections were commissioned by Caledonian MacBrayne to produce a video that would celebrate the 165-year anniversary of their historic and ongoing relationship with the west coast of Scotland. The client expressed a desire that the video would showcase the best of Scotland; stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, culture of live music, thriving wildlife and diverse archives. Our collective ambition was to create a projection mapping video evoking nostalgia for the islands. We wanted to ask “what Scotland’s west coast means to you?”.

The brief also required Double Take Projections to include many of the localities that Caledonian MacBrayne serves in the video. One of the main aims of the project was to motivate the public to visit these fantastic locations.

We were encouraged to explore new techniques; pushing projection mapping and filming to the limits. There was also the question of which soundtrack and artists to use.
Double Take Projections’ mesmerising film explores Cal Mac’s enduring role at the heart of Scotland’s west coast. The three-and-a-half-minute-long video incorporates imagery from the 1944 David MacBrayne film ‘Islands of Youth’ and Caledonian MacBrayne footage along with our creative. We travelled around 30 locations where each projection was recorded over a two-hour period using time-lapse cameras for 12 summer nights and the projection mapping video was created from this footage. The soundtrack to the projection mapping video, ‘Home on the Sea’, was written and performed by traditional Scottish highland music band Skipinnish.
