The LAS, currently based in Portland, Oregon, was looking to create another home base in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Society wanted this new space to function primarily as a restaurant and bar, but to be flexible and able to comfortably accommodate talks, readings, writing classes, and special events. Only half of this building was done under this project, the other half is reserved for a cafe and bookshop space to be designed at a later date.
The proposed location on North Water Street in the Third Ward, and a collage of the most common neighborhood materials deeply associated with the area.
Parti diagrams and floor plans of the first floor and lower level. The first floor has restaurant space, with flexible and communal U-shaped seating, a prominent entryway with a host stand and waiting areas, server stations, and a large void at the stair. The lower level houses the kitchen space, the restrooms, and a bar with additional lounge seating.
Reflected ceiling plans of the first floor and lower level, showing lighting and the placement of decorative ceiling elements that help differentiate between spaces.
A render of the restaurant area, modeled in SketchUp, rendered in Podium, and stylized in Adobe Photoshop, as well as Photoshopped in light fixtures. On the lower level, a water feature wall is visible, created in Lumion.
Lower level renderings of the lounge seating, bar, and the illuminated feature wall of green metal and weathered wood, with the kitchen behind it, that echos the ceiling elements over the bar and the restaurant, and the other wall in the lounge area. These were also made with a combination of SketchUp, Podium, Lumion, and Photoshop.
